History and Background of CA Day

The history of the CA profession in India began in 1913 with the Indian Companies Act, which introduced the rule of appointing auditors in companies. In 1918, the Government started the Diploma in Accountancy course, marking the beginning of formal accounting education. On 1st July 1949, the Indian Parliament passed the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949, which officially established ICAI.

Gopal Das Padamsi Kapadia was the first CA in India and the first President of ICAI from 1949 to 1952. He became the first CA of India during British rule and was called to the bar in 1937. He achieved this despite strong social taboos and even after facing imprisonment during the Non-Cooperation Movement by the British government.
